Proper installation is critical to ensure long-term performance and maintain warranty coverage. These are the most important things to know:
- Proper Storage and Handling:
Store siding panels flat and off the ground on a dry surface. Protect them from moisture by keeping them covered until ready to install. Avoid exposing the product to water before it’s painted or sealed.
- Acclimation:
Let the siding acclimate to local environmental conditions for at least 24 hours before installation. This minimizes expansion or contraction after it’s installed.
- Use the Right Fasteners:
Use corrosion-resistant nails or screws, preferably hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel. Fasteners should be long enough to penetrate the framing by at least 1½ inches.
- Nailing Guidelines:
Fasten panels every 6 inches on center along the edges and 12 inches in the field for panels. Maintain recommended edge and end distances (typically ¾” from edges, 3/8″ from ends).
- Flashing and Sealing:
Install metal flashing above all horizontal trim, windows, and doors. Caulk all joints and gaps with high-quality, paintable exterior sealant.
- Joint Treatment:
For lap siding, use butt joints over studs and install with joint flashing or sealant. LP recommends factory-primed ends for best results.
- Maintain Clearances:
Maintain a minimum of 6 inches from the ground and 1 inch above roofs, decks, and other horizontal surfaces to prevent moisture wicking.
- Painting and Finishing:
Paint within 180 days of installation using high-quality acrylic latex paint. All cut ends must be primed or sealed before painting.
- Follow Manufacturer Guidelines:
Always follow LP’s installation manual for your specific product line (lap, panel, or trim) to ensure proper installation and warranty compliance.
